Philadelphia Union II emerged with the extra point after edging past New York Red Bulls II in a penalty shootout following a closely contested 1-1 draw.
First Half
New York Red Bulls II looked the better side in the first half with more possession and creating the better chances. However, Philadelphia Union II kept their shape and organization with their goalkeeper George Marks making a crucial save towards the end of the half.
Second Half
Philadelphia Union II scored the opening goal in the 63rd minute against the run of play with Lennon Harrington rising to the occasion with a header from a cross by Jordan Griffin to score his first professional goal and put the hosts ahead.
Late Equalizer
After going down, Red Bulls II launched an attack in numbers and increased the pressure. Their efforts were rewarded in the late stages of stoppage time when Paul Sokoloff netted the ball, making the game even at 1-1 and forcing a shootout.
Penalty Shootout
The shootout was an intense and closely contested one, but Union II remained calm and composed. Once again, George Marks came up trumps for Union II, making vital saves and slotting home the winning penalty to give his team a 4-3 win in the shootout.
Summary
Union II were solid in their performance, and George Marks was the star man for Union II. Red Bulls II would consider themselves unlucky for having equalized late in the game, but in the end, Philadelphia edged out their rivals from the spot.
